A young Dad who migrated to Teesside with few qualifications has engineered himself a new future after studying hard and landing a sought-after job.
Adam Juma, originally from Tanzania, came to the UK from Sudan and started a cleaning job at Middlesbrough College to support his family.
Juggling being a father of four children aged between one and 14, Adam also studied English at Hope Foundation.
The ambitious Dad was encouraged by Middlesbrough College tutor Ian Moore to study full time and started a Basic Car Maintenance course – achieving excellent exam results and progressing right up to Level 4.
Adam explained: “My dream was to go to university and get a good career to support my family here on Teesside.
“My tutor at Middlesbrough College, Ian, encouraged me to go for it so I applied to Teesside University.
“I didn’t have the required levels for English, maths and physics so took a summer course to get there.”
After starting a foundation course at Teesside University he went on to a degree in Instrumentation and Control, achieving a 2:1 this summer.
And now hard-working Adam has landed a sought-after job at Newton Aycliffe-base conveyor system manufacturer Advanced Automation.
Adam added: “It’s a fantastic feeling to have got this far and landed a great job.
“The best part is my family are so proud of me. My wife supported me and my kids look up to their Dad – the two eldest now want to go to university too.
“I can’t thank the staff at Middlesbrough College enough, particularly Ian Moore who believed in me the whole way and inspired me to reach my potential.”
Ian Moore, Middlesbrough College tutor, said: “I’m so pleased for Adam, he’s a great guy with a fantastic attitude and tenacity.
“I know he’s destined for great things and it’s a pleasure to say Middlesbrough College played an important part in helping him reach his potential.”
