Tekmar Energy has signed a multi-million pound contract with the world’s largest offshore wind developer to provide cable protection systems.
The Aycliffe-based company, part of the Tekmar group, will provide Dutch firm Ørsted with its patented cable systems for Hornsea Two in the North Sea which, when constructed, will become the world’s largest offshore wind farm.
Tekmar Energy, which employs 115 people, will utilise its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility on Aycliffe Business Park to complete the contract.
Hornsea Two is the sister project to Hornsea One and comprises of 165 turbines with a combined total capacity of 1.4 GW.
Located about 55 miles off the Yorkshire coast, Hornsea Two will provide clean electricity to well over 1.3 million homes and is set for completion in 2022.
For the project Tekmar will be providing 346 cable protection systems and a further 30 bellmouths, for both the array and export cables, protecting each and every subsea cable as they enter and exit the underwater foundations.
Tekmar Energy managing director Russell Edmondson said: “We are delighted for Tekmar to be selected as the cable protection system and bellmouth supplier for Hornsea Two.

“The North East continues to play an important role in manufacturing components for our portfolio of world-leading offshore wind farms, with hundreds of Cable Protection Systems, Transition Pieces and kilometres of array cables coming from the region.”
The cable protection project will mark Tekmar’s 76th project within the industry, retaining Tekmar’s record securing more than 75% of the global market in offshore wind cable protection.
Tekmar Energy is one of Tekmar Group plc’s four primary operating companies, in addition to Subsea Innovation, AgileTek Engineering and Ryder Geotechnical.
