Consett 4, Newton Aycliffe 4
By Paul McGeary
Newton Aycliffe crumbled to another heavy defeat – their third in the space of seven days – as Consett ran out comfortable 4-0 victors at Belle View.
Kenny Lindoe’s side were streets ahead of their opponents, with front pair Michael Mackay and Luke Sullivan a constant menace. By contrast, Aycliffe were largely toothless, leaving rookie boss Adie Webster with plenty to think about ahead of Monday’s derby clash with Bishop Auckland.
The Steelmen took the lead on 16 minutes when Sullivan fed the ball to former Aycliffe target Adam Nicholls, who weaved through two challenges before curling a fine effort past debutant ‘keeper Will Jones.
Ironically the goal came after an opening 15 minutes which saw the visitors enjoy their best, and only spell. Tom Atkinson headed a corner wide in what proved the Newtonians’ best chance.
Dan Madden created the second for the hosts when he was allowed to carry the ball from the back and feed Sullivan who fired home from an acute angle, after an exquisite dummy from Mackay had bamboozled the Aycliffe rearguard.
The second half proved no better for Webster’s side as they huffed and puffed without any real conviction, and Consett seized in the closing stages to make the scoreline more comfortable.
Johnny Wright scored the third goal after playing a one-two with Sullivan and in the final minute, full back David Brown fired an unstoppable 20-yard shot into the roof of the net to round off the afternoons scoring, and inflict another four goal defeat on the Royal Blues.
