New summer opening hours for Household Waste Recycling Centres

Residents in Durham are being informed that the county’s Household Waste Recycling Centres will soon be switching to summer opening hours.

Between 1 April and 30 September, HWRCs will operate the following summer opening hours:

9.00am – 6.00pm everyday:
• Annfield Plain
• Heighington Lane, Newton Aycliffe
• Middleton-in-Teesdale
• Potterhouse Lane, Pity Me
• Romanway, Bishop Auckland
• Seaham
• Tudhoe

10.00am – 4.00pm Monday to Thursday and 9.00am – 6.00pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays:
• Coxhoe
• Horden
• Thornley

9.00am – 6.00pm on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays only:
• Hett Hills, Chester-le-Street
• Stainton Grove, Barnard Castle

In addition, extra opening hours will be in operation at Hett Hills Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) following the Easter weekend.

Hett Hills HWRC is usually open on a weekend and bank holidays only, but over the busy Easter period it will be opened throughout the week from Friday 14 April until Friday 21 April 2017.

Historically, at Easter, HWRCs become very busy and experience high usage.

In response to the increased demand at this time of year, Hett Hills HWRC will be open for four extra days to provide more choice for residents to dispose of household waste.

From Saturday 22 April 2017 the site will return to its standard weekend and bank holiday opening hours – open from 9.00am to 6.00pm.

Cllr Brian Stephens, Cabinet member for neighbourhoods and local partnerships at Durham County Council, said: “The HWRCs will be open longer from 1 April giving people more opportunity to use the sites to dispose of waste and recycle.

“Also, following the help it provided last year, we’re once again opening Hett Hills HWRC on additional days during the Easter period.

“We know the recycling centres are busy during this time and the extra facility will give people flexibility to dispose of their waste.”

Details of all HWRCs, including locations and opening hours, are available at www.durham.gov.uk/hwrc or by calling Durham County Council on 03000 26 1000.

Residents who are planning to visit a HWRC in a van, trailer, mini-bus or pick-up will need to apply for a free waste permit in advance.

This can be done online at www.durham.gov.uk/householdpermit or by calling 03000 26 1000.

Commercial waste produced by businesses and landlords is not accepted at HWRCs and must be disposed of by a registered waste carrier.

Further details can be found at www.durham.gov.uk/commercialwaste
