Hitachi’s new plant manager for the proposed £77m Newton Aycliffe factory is relishing his new role in the North-East.
Darren Cumner, 42, quit a secure job to join Hitachi Rail Europe seven weeks ago – a signal of the company’s confidence their £4.5bn Intercity Express Programme (IEP) will be rubber-stamped by the government.
He plans to relocate his wife, Joanne, and their 18-month-old daughter from their home in Bristol to County Durham.
Mr Cumner says Thursday’s construction open day was a positive step forward.
“It was a very positive day, it shows a lot of intent by Hitachi and we’re really exciting about going forward,” he said.

“I was actually employed by Hitachi seven weeks ago, we’re very confident we’ll get the IEP contract signed and full steam ahead.
“The warmth I’ve received up here has been great, so I’m looking forward to relocating to the area very soon.”
Mr Cumner brings a wealth of experience, which includes 20 years with brake system manufacturer Knorr Bremse, who employed him a variety of senior roles in locations such as Hungary, Russia and on a three-year project in Japan.
His time spent setting up a factory in China could also prove invaluable in the upcoming months.
More recently he worked for Parker Hannifin, whose products are used by the likes of JCB and Caterpillar.
Last month, he was tempted away from that role by the chance to become Hitachi’s first employer on their North-East project.
“It is vital we build up a pipeline of skilled workers, so I have been out to see local training providers,” he added.
“Hitachi places great emphasis on training young people and offering apprenticeships.
“We intend to continue that here”.
