The first of three information events, organised to give up to date advice to residents about the potential impacts of Brexit, will take place next week.
The first free public session will be held at The Sage, Gateshead, from 5.30pm to 7pm on Thursday, September 20.
This will focus on citizens’ rights and will be attended by British Member of the European Parliament, Jude Kirton-Darling (pictured above), and the director of immigration specialists, Seraphus solicitors, Christopher Desira.
Of particular interest to nationals from other EU member states will be information about how to register for the Home Office’s settled status programme in order to be able to access education, healthcare and other state benefits in the UK post 2021.
The second session focusses on the potential impact of Brexit to local businesses. This will be led by Sally Jones, Deloitte’s international trade policy director and chair of a trade group which liaises with government departments.
This will take place at The Stadium of Light in Sunderland from 8am to 10.30am on Tuesday, October 30.
The final event will discuss Brexit’s influence on higher education. This will be held at Durham University on Thursday, November, from 6pm to 7.30pm.
The free events are arranged by the Europe Direct service, managed by Durham County Council.
Brian Stobie, the council’s international officer, said: “It is hoped these events will allow people to ask the questions that are important to them. The events will not reflect any political viewpoint, but aim to inform people as to how a Brexit deal may affect them.”
