Durham Constabulary’s new deputy chief constable will be making the short trip down the A1 when she takes up her post.

Jo Farrell, who is currently an Assistant Chief Constable with Northumbria Police, has been named as Durham’s new deputy.

She succeeds the previous incumbent, Steve Watson, who left earlier in the summer to become the Chief Constable for South Yorkshire Police.

Mrs Farrell joined Northumbria in 2002 as a Chief Inspector, having previously served with Cambridgeshire Constabulary.

She currently has responsibility for Response and Neighbourhood Policing, the Communications department and is the force lead for mental health matters.

Mrs Farrell, 48 said; “I’m delighted to be joining the team at Durham. I relish the challenge of becoming the Deputy Chief Constable and will work to ensure the force continues to deliver a top quality service to the communities of County Durham and Darlington.

“I bring a wealth of policing experience having worked in two forces, and welcome the opportunity to work closely with the talented staff within Durham Constabulary.”

Jo Farrell is married to a retired police officer and has two stepsons and a daughter. Outside of work she enjoys family life, cooking and keeping fit.

Her 25 years police service has seen her work predominantly within operational and neighbourhood duties.

Durham’s Chief Constable, Mike Barton said: “We are delighted to welcome new talent into the force. With all Jo’s policing experience we look forward to her casting a critical eye over us, and I am sure that once she has settled in she will be making her presence felt.”
