Aycliffe stumble in FA Cup

Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round Replay
Newton Aycliffe 2, Guisborough Town 3

Match report by Ryan Livingston

Newton Aycliffe lost out to Guisborough Town in an FA Cup replay last Tuesday.

In a game that was affected by wet conditions, Aycliffe started off the brighter team, with long sustained possession and intricate passing.

And within 12 minutes of play, Aycliffe would make it 1-0 courtesy of Jake Petitjean’s header.

Aycliffe kept ruthlessly going forward, but several harsh offsides would keep the scoreline at 1-0.

Finally, in the 40th minute, Liam Jarvie would get himself into the right place, at the right time, to fire a classy finish with plenty of skill to make it 2-0.

The home side looked firmly in the driver’s seat, and with Oscar Eckley-Aldsworth unlucky not to score twice, one would think the floodgates would be about to open.

Sadly, Aycliffe would concede within seconds of the second half starting, Guisborough were given far too much freedom in the home team’s box, and Kurtis Howes made it count.

Aycliffe would have a lot of possession after this, but they failed to extend their lead.

It would also become a scrappy game, with many breaks in play. This made it challenging for Aycliffe to play their free flowing, attractive footballing style.

Aycliffe’s final big chance came courtesy of Liam Cooke, his wonderful curling shot flying over the bar.

The final few minutes were nervy, and Guisborough eventually got a set piece on the edge of the box which was successfully converted by Joseph Pickett in the 90th minute.

Aycliffe were now crestfallen, and Cole Kiernan cooly fired the ball home in added time home to seal a 3-2 victory to the Priorymen.

Guisborough followed up with a win at Pontefract Collieries on Saturday to take them into the First Qualifying Round Draw.

The result left Aycliffe with a free Saturday before a trip to Liversedge on Tuesday (August 22).

That game’s followed by Aycliffe’s first ever home Northern Premier League match when Grimsby Borough visit Moore Lane on Saturday, August 26 (ko 3pm).
