Woodham whizz-kids make Maths competition national final

March 8th, 2018 Martin Walker Community 0 comments 0

Woodham Academy students struck gold as they made it through to the next stage of a national maths competition.

Callum Fielden and Richie Steward received gold awards in the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Challenge.

A further 11 Woodham Academy students received either silver or bronze awards for their high scores in the challenging competition.

Students completed challenging and intriguing question papers in school, before they were returned to the UKMT for external marking.

Maths teacher Sophie Elliott said: “At Woodham Academy, we provide all our students with opportunities to excel across and beyond the curriculum.

“This was a truly tough challenge, requiring an extensive knowledge of mathematics. Many congratulations to Callum and Richie for making it through to the final round, and to all our students who took part. They all did remarkably well and should feel proud of their achievements.”

Callum, who recorded the school’s highest score, and Richie, who won the prize for best in year, will now take part in the final round of the UKMT Challenge.

Silver certificates will be awarded to Jak Kennedy, Owen Lister, Liam Luck, Lucas Pilling, Emilie Dunn, Hannah Tam and Charlie Pemberton, while bronze goes to Andrew Blair, Joseph Capstack, Hannah Cox and Amy Chatt.
