THE JOURNO’S PANEL

August 9th, 2012 Martin Walker NAFC 0 comments 0

Our panel of three football writers give their predictions on Newton Aycliffe’s game this weekend…

Three points are awarded if our ‘experts’ pick the exact score, 1 point awarded if they get the result correct.

Paul McGeary (pictured left), Aycliffe FC’s official historican and statistician, says: “Holker play a division below us in the North West Counties equivalent to the Northern League and haven’t made the best of starts to their league campaign this time round. A long bus journey today won’t have helped them and our lads are determined to get an FA Cup victory under their belts following last years disappointment. I’m going to go for a home victory with a few goals to boot. Aycliffe 4, Holker Old Boys 0.”

Glen Robertson (centre), Aycliffe Today sports editor, says: “The club are determined to make up for last year’s horror show at this stage. The 7-2 defeat was a freak result – as proved when Aycliffe beat Billingham Synthonia in the league soon after. They won’t make the same mistakes again this year. Holker (who started their league campaign at the weekend) have played two, lost two, scored none and conceded 10. They’ve lost a couple of their best players over the summer and they won’t bring many fans to support them either. Hopefully Moore Lane Park will be packed with Newtonians and Allan Oliver’s men will be cheered on to a first-ever FA Cup victory. A 3-1 win.”

Martin Walker, Aycliffe Today editor and Mantis Media director: “The lads are desperate to make up for last year’s disappointment, and they’re well aware how important a good cup run is for us this season, so Allan will have them fired up and I think we’ll get off to a flying start. Holker will relish playing on our surface in our superb environment, but our supreme fitness will prove far too much for our visitors, so it’ll be a comfortable thrashing to get our FA Cup campaign off to a flying start. 3-0.”

All three experts predicted defeat for Allan’s men last Friday so scored zero points for their ill picks as Aycliffe despatched higher league opposition in Harrogate Town, 1-0!
