Store worker is handed inaugural Community Spirit Award

September 9th, 2021 Martin Walker Community 0 comments 0

A store worker at Tesco in the town has been handed an inaugural gong to celebrate local community spirit.

Shirley Cormack, the community champion at Tesco, has been recognised with the very first Community Spirit Award, by the Aycliffe Community Spirit group.

“We think it is time that we hear positive stories about people who go above and beyond to help Newton Aycliffe community,” said one of the Community Spirit group members, Jo Jones.

“We are hoping that we can encourage people of any age to be kind, considerate and to think of ways to improve the town we live in.

“We launched our new Community Spirit award scheme by surprising Shirley Cormack, the community champion at Tesco Newton Aycliffe, with a medal and certificate to show our appreciation of all the hard work and help she gives to people in the community.

“The list is too long to mention, but she has always helped community spirit with donations and help with Christmas hampers, without her the community would be lost.”

The Aycliffe Community Spirit group is made up of Jo and Nev Jones, Linzi Beal, Katie Bain Collins, Lorraine Elliot, Andrea Miller, Russ Gibson, Leane Gibson, Lynne Siddens and Michael Stead.

If you would like to nominate a family or person for a future Community Spirit Award, email [email protected].

Families and children will receive their awards at the family discos run every month. The next family disco is 17th September 17 (5.30-7.30pm). Families are encouraged to go along.
