Funding success for Aycliffe support group

July 6th, 2015 Martin Walker Community 0 comments 0

A support group which helps people affected by cancer including their relatives and carers is celebrating securing funding from Great Aycliffe and Middridge Partnership (GAMP).

Great Aycliffe Cancer Support Group was set up by Allison White in 2014 and now has more than 20 members.

The group meets every month at Newton Aycliffe Youth and Community Centre and is also open to people from surrounding towns and villages, including Bishop Auckland, Spennymoor, Shildon and Darlington.

As well as arranging guest speakers and access to relevant information, the group also enjoy pamper sessions, lunch outings and day trips.

Funding has recently been secured through GAMP’s Community Grant Fund to help the group cover the cost of arranging day trips and activities for its members.

Allison said: “Sometimes when people are diagnosed with cancer they can feel a sense of loneliness and isolation. Some of our members live alone and do not see anyone apart from a doctor, nurse or carer, so it can get very lonely for them.

“By coming to groups like ours they can meet new people, socialise and help regain their confidence.”

The next meeting takes place at Newton Aycliffe Youth and Community Centre, on Thursday 3rd September 6pm until 7.30pm.

The guest speaker will be a representative from the British Red Cross, who will talk about their services in the area.

If you are interested in coming along to the group or just want further information, please contact Allison White on 07762 258696.
