February 9th, 2012 Martin Walker Sport 0 comments 0

It has been a fantastic season for Greenfield Tuesday night league’s newly-crowned champions the Itallianos.

They seemed destined for a mid-table finish but a sensational run of six straight wins after Christmas and other results going their way they piped Blackstars to the seven-a-side title by one point.

Blackstars won 3-1 over Dream team to finish second, with West Auckland Athletic finishing third after an impressive 3-0 over the North Brit.

The title winning Italianos squad (pictured): Ben Stevens, Ollie Gell, Sean Johnson, Matty Morgan, Adam Gilmore, Nathan Hopper, Jordan Foster, John Morgan and Thomas Henty.

Team Manager Matty Morgan was thrilled with their first piece of silverware. “It’s been a hard fought season, but the lads never game up giving 110% every game,” he beamed.

Attention now turns to the first ever Greenfield League Cup, The competition will all be played on Tuesday 28th February, the quarter final draw: North Brit v Real Deal Blackstars v West Auckland United West Auckland Athletic v Huntsman Itallianos v Young Boys

Organiser of the league, Greenfield’s community sports manager Michael Rippon, was extremely keen to have a cup competition.

“This gives all teams are great opportunity for all the teams to gain some silver wear, as anyone can beat anyone in this league on their day,” said Michael.

Michael is now looking to extend the league from 10 to 12 teams.
