Aycliffe slip up with second league defeat

September 6th, 2022 Martin Walker NAFC 0 comments 0

Sunderland RCA 2, Newton Aycliffe 1

By Bob Wood

Newton Aycliffe slipped to their second defeat in a week with a disappointing result at Sunderland RCA.

The 2-1 loss saw Whitley Bay overtake them to take the lead of the Ebac Northern League.

The Newtonians conceded a goal on 12 minutes when a fine long range strike from former player Thibault Charmey found the net.

Fifteen minutes later worse was to follow when a cross from the right found Fryatt who curled his shot inside the post and out of Aycliffe keeper Adam McHugh’s reach.

Aycliffe manager Brian Atkinson made changes at half time, bringing on Ben Reay and Jack Naylor.

The second half saw a much better performance from the visitors but they were still unable to finish their chances.

It wasn’t until deep into added time that midfielder Marc Costello was able to get a goal, heading in a corner.

The RCA keeper attempted to scramble the ball away but the assistant referee signalled that it had crossed the line.

There was one further corner as Aycliffe made a last desperate attempt to grab a point by sending keeper McHugh upfield but he couldn’t effect the rescue.

Following the disappointment of Saturday, Aycliffe also suffered a disappointing 3-1 defeat at West Auckland Ton on Tuesday night.

The Newtonians are at home to Thornaby on Saturday (September 10). The two sides played the reverse fixture only on August 20, with Liam Jarvie’s goal being enough to secure the points.

After a hectic start to the season there are fewer fixtures in September with the current schedule:

Saturday 10 Sept – Thornaby (h)
Tuesday 20 Sept – Guisborough (h)
Sat 24 Sept – Birtley Town (a) – FA Vase
Sat 1 Oct – Northallerton (h)

Fixtures are subject to change so please check out the latest details on social media or the website www.newtonaycliffefc.co.uk
