Aycliffe Runners compete in Lord Stones Café and Pier to Pier races

May 27th, 2016 Martin Walker Sport 0 comments 0

Aycliffe club runners have participated in races around the region enjoying local countryside and sights.

John Burnside was the sole runner from Aycliffe running club to compete in the latest of the Summer Tees Trail 5k races, which was held at Lord Stones Cafe on the 19 May.

Because of a marshalling error, John, along with some other runners was sent the wrong way up a steep hill before having to come back to join the main group of runners. Despite this John finished 30th in the time of 25:33.

Four Aycliffe club runners competed in the Pier to Pier on Sunday 22 May. The race is organised by Sunderland Strollers and is approximately 7 miles, with the route taking runners from South Shields Pier to Roker Pier.

It starts on the beach at South Shields and follows the coastline across the Leas, past Marsden Grotto, Souter Lighthouse, Whitburn and finishes on the beach at Roker Pier.

Runners take their own route avoiding public highways. The terrain is sand, grass, tarmac, and cliff top paths with a few gates and steps thrown in along the way. There were 1128 finishers.

First back for Aycliffe was Robert Young in 52:31, followed by Martha McBarron in 56:31, Trish Kay in 59:13 and Angela Barrett in 61:13. The weather was good, bright and sunny with a slight breeze.
