Lee Weldon’s weekly round-up from the wicket…

Saturday 28th August – NYSD Division 2

Marton 2nd XI v Newton Aycliffe 1st XI – weather was sunny and mild. Marton won the toss and chose to bat first.

Marton 2nd XI 188 for 7 after 50 overs
Matty Greaves 3 for 21, George Slatcher 1 for 28, James Layfield-Carroll 1 for 32 and Jack Slatcher 1 for 32

Newton Aycliffe 1st XI 149 for 9 after 50 overs
Chris Palmer 32, Luke Telford 24 and Tom Dearden 16 not out

Aycliffe battled hard and were rewarded with a draw away at second in the table Marton 2nd XI. Sixteen-year-old Matty Greaves (sponsored by Britannia Fire) took the honours with the ball finishing with his first team best figures of 3 for 21 from his seven over spell.
Veteran Chris Palmer top scored in the Aycliffe reply with 32 from 45 balls faced and credit must also go to 14-year-old Thomas Dearden who dug in and defied the homeside’s attack for 59 balls, remaining undefeated at the end with 16 not out, his highest first team score.

Bank Holiday Monday 30th August – NYSD Division 2

Newton Aycliffe 1st XI v Rockliffe Park 1st XI – weather was overcast and cool. Newton Aycliffe won the toss and chose to bowl first. Match Sponsored by Midland Structural Services.

Rockliffe Park 1st XI 146 all out after 45 overs
Matty Greaves 3 for 36, Michael Howe 3 for 42 and George Slatcher 2 for 11

Newton Aycliffe 1st XI 59 all out after 23.5 overs
James Layfield-Carroll 18 not out and George Slatcher 10

The first team were well beaten by 87 runs at home to Rockliffe Park after an extraordinary batting collapse saw them teetering on 16 for 8 before a last wicket partnership of 29 by James Layfield-Carroll (sponsored by Unison) and George Slatcher helped pushed their side’s total to 59 all out, their lowest score this season. Earlier in the game 16 year old Matty Greaves and Michael Howe both bowled well, each taking three wickets in the visitors innings.

Aycliffe picked up 14 points from the two games they played over the weekend to give them a total of 213 points and they now currently sit in eighth place in the NYSD 2nd division table with just one game left to play.

Saturday 28th August – NYSD Division 4

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI v Preston 1st XI – Preston conceded the game as they were unable to field a team so Aycliffe 2nd team were awarded the full 25 points.

Bank Holiday Monday 30th August – NYSD Division 4

Sedgefield 2nd XI v Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI – weather was overcast and cool. Newton Aycliffe won the toss and chose to bat first.

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI 68 all out after 27.4 overs
Leo Mercy 22, Owen Smith 12 and Ryan Patrick 11

Sedgefield 2nd XI 70 for 1 after 23.5 overs
Harrison Pearson 1 for 6

Our young 2nd team completed their season with a nine wicket defeat away at third in the table Sedgefield 2nd XI. 16 year Leo Mercy (sponsored by Joint Design Direction) finished his fine season by top scoring for Aycliffe with 22 runs off 52 balls faced and he hit three boundaries.
Aycliffe’s second team finished their season with the playing record that reads : Played 22, Won 5, Lost 8, Drew 3 and six games that were not played due to bad weather and Covid-19. The final points total was 216 and they finished in a very creditable 7th place in the NYSD 4th division.

This week’s only senior cricket fixture:
Saturday 4th September at 12.30pm – NYSD Division 2 – Newton Aycliffe 1st XI v Bedale 1st XI.
