Aycliffe Cricket round-up

Lee Weldon’s weekly round-up from the wicket…

Saturday 1st May – NYSD Division 2

Northallerton 1st XI v Newton Aycliffe 1st XI – weather was sunny, but cold. Northallerton won the toss and chose to bowl first.

Newton Aycliffe 1st XI 228 for 8 after 50 overs
Luke Telford 50, Adam Gittins 46 and Jack Slatcher 35 not out

Northallerton 1st XI 213 for 8 after 47.2 overs
Luke Telford 3 for 20, Michael Howe 2 for 57 and James Layfield-Carroll 1 for 35

Aycliffe first team let victory literally slip through their fingers as a number of dropped catches helped Northallerton to claim a draw, when a first win of the season for Aycliffe seemed the more likely outcome.
The highlight of the game for Aycliffe was an excellent all-round performance from Luke Telford (sponsored by Unison, pictured above), who top scored with 50 runs, which was his first half century for two years and he then followed that up by taking three wickets for 20 runs in the Northallerton innings.

Saturday 1st May – NYSD Division 4

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI v Richmond 4th XI – weather was sunny, but chilly. Richmond won the toss and chose to bat first.

Richmond 4th XI 215 for 5 after 40 overs
Sean Morgan 2 for 47, Tom Dearden 2 for 50 and Harrison Pearson 1 for 36

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI 127 for 8 after 40 overs
Sean Morgan 43, Ryan Patrick 24 and Leo Mercy 15

The second team again packed their side with young juniors and they proved their worth with a battling home draw against promotion favourites Richmond 4th XI.
Sean Morgan (sponsored by Unison) had a terrific all round game and followed up his 2 for 47 with the ball in the Richmond innings by top scoring in the Aycliffe reply with 43 runs from 61 balls including six fours.
Special mention must go to both, 13 year old debutant Leo Stout (2 not out) and fellow 13 year old Harrison Pearson (1 not out) as the young 9th wicket pair safely batted out the last four overs in a tense finale, to see Aycliffe through to stumps and earn their side a well deserved draw.
