Newton Aycliffe have added experienced central defender Stephen Salvin to their ranks after the 32-year-old agreed a switch from local rivals Bishop Auckland.

The former Blue Star and Gateshead player was a legend for the Two Blues, scoring 45 times in 291 appearances, having initially joined Bishops in 2001.

Salvin – once a box-to-box midfield player – becomes Allan Oliver’s sixth summer signing as he looks to rebuild Aycliffe following the departures of homegrown trio Sean Tarling, Darren Craddock and Scott Pocklington.

Oliver also lost highly rated midfielder Tom Hinchley while attacking duo Shaun Reay and Kris Hughes also left Moore Lane Park in the close season.

Salvin joins Billingham Town duo Christian Selby and Dan Molyneux, Shildon’s Jamie Owens and Coundon pair Michael Gibson and Scott Oldfield as the Newtonians’ new recruits.

• Salvin is pictured with Bishop’s former Chairman Terry Jackson, after captaining the Two Blues to last season’s Durham Challenge Cup triumph.
