Young parents celebrated after completing 20-week course

October 25th, 2017 Martin Walker Community 0 comments 0

Teenage parents who completed a course to help develop their life skills were recognised at an event earlier this week.

More than 50 young parents were invited to the celebration at Hardwick Park near Sedgefield after taking part in the Teen Parent programme, run by Durham County Council’s One Point Service.

The 20-week course aimed to increase opportunities for education, employment and training, reduce health inequalities and raise self-esteem, aspirations and educational attainment.

It also supports parents to develop life-skills and positive work-life goals.

Cllr Olwyn Gunn, Cabinet member for children and young people, said: “It was great to see so many people at this event to recognise the achievements these parents have made over the last few months.

“Caring for a baby is not easy and we all need support, particularly those who are still young themselves.

“This course helps parents give their children the best start in life as well as making sure they develop their own skills which will be useful in their future careers or training.”
