WOODHAM’S SUMMER CONCERT SUCCESS

July 14th, 2012 Martin Walker News 0 comments 0

A packed college concert last week marked the end of another successful year at Woodham Community Technology College.

From the word go, the audience at the Annual Summer Concert was enthralled with a diverse range of material from Woodham Instrumental Group, through a range of vocal and instrumental solo performances, to the college’s well-established Samba Band and “Woodham Sound”.

Former student and aspiring singer-actor, Nathan Elwick, returned to the college to captivate the audience with two vocal solos.

Nathan is currently in rehearsals for “Miss Saigon” at the Gala Theatre in Durham, but took time out from his busy schedule to ensure he could perform at the concert.

Year 11 student Tom Bussey and William Kirton from Year 10 wowed the crowd with a performance of Four Chord Song by Axis of Awesome, a medley of popular songs that all follow the pop-punk chord progression.

The twist to this particular performance was that whilst William was performing his half of the medley live on stage at Woodham, Tom’s contribution was beamed in via video link from Camp Cody in New Hampshire, USA, where, along with three other Woodham students, he is participating in a month long American summer camp coaching a multitude of sports.

The group flew out to Boston on Sunday 2nd July, but modern technology meant that Tom was able to be in two places at one time!

The Music Department have worked tirelessly this year to create musical opportunities within the college.

Woodham’s Got Talent earlier in the year provided a showcase for singers, musicians and dancers of a particularly high standard.

The Summer Concert was the culmination of a year of hard work and the students enchanted the audience with a variety of musical items.

There was something for everyone and there could not have been a bigger or better response to the concert – with a full house of enthusiastic students, parents, friends and staff.

Compere of the concert and Head of Geography, Katherine Barker, said: “It was marvellous to see the final result of what students have been working really hard for, we were very proud.

“One of the really exciting things was to see former student, Nathan Elwick return to sing.  He is a superb role model for our students to follow and shows that you can live the dream”

The Music Department is ending  the year on a high note. This coming week, following hot on the heels of the concert, the college will be playing host to a sizzling band from New Orleans, “The Stooges”, who will be performing for students from Woodham, Greenfield and local primary schools.
