Woodham Academy set for multi-million pound rebuild

December 9th, 2022 Martin Walker Community 0 comments 0

One of Newton Aycliffe’s secondary schools is set to see a major redevelopment including all-new playing fields, a new school building and a swimming pool if planning permission is granted.

Woodham Academy has applied for permission to demolish the current school building which would see new playing fields and landscaping alongside a new three-storey school building including a brand new sports hall.

The current site is described as “fragmented” and poor in terms of energy efficiency. The application suggests the current school is at the end of its natural life cycle and ready for replacement.

A new building would be more environmentally friendly and a better place for teaching.

County Councillor Michael Stead (North Aycliffe and Middridge) said: “I’m absolutely delighted that Woodham Academy is getting the investment it needs for rebuilding.

“With the £20m investment the County Council has also announced for Greenfield School, both our secondary schools are getting much needed investment after many years of deteriorating buildings.

“This is wonderful news for Newton Aycliffe and for children across the town.”

The new school would house around 1,200 students and 103 full-time staff.

Meanwhile, the new building’s total space amounts to 9,723 sqm and would provide 55 teaching spaces.

Solar panels and “green roofs” with grass and plant life and biodiversity are also planned.

The planning application consultation period has started and will run for 21 days until the December 28. The application reference is DM/22/03529/FPA and the plans can be viewed on Durham County Council’s website.
