Top tips for keeping safe this summer

May 31st, 2017 Martin Walker Features 0 comments 0

People are being advised to keep safe in warm weather as higher temperatures are set to continue across County Durham.

Although last week’s sunshine seems to have disappeared for now, Public Health England has issued advice for people to follow over the coming months.

Top tips to keep safe in the sun include:

• Try to keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm
• Wear UV sunglasses to reduce exposure in the eyes
• Apply sunscreen of at least SPF15 with UVA protection and wear a wide brimmed hat
• Drink lots of cool drinks and ensure you take water with you when travelling

People are also being asked to keep a close eye on vulnerable groups, such as older people, young children and babies and those with serious illnesses.

Public Health England issue hot weather alerts when there is a high chance temperatures will hit certain thresholds for at least two consecutive days and the intervening night.

Amanda Healy, Durham County Council’s director of public health, said: “While we should enjoy the hot weather when we get it, people should be aware that high temperatures can be dangerous, especially for vulnerable groups.

“Most of the advice is common sense but we would urge everyone to think more carefully about older people and young children who may feel the ill-effects of the heat over the coming months.”
