Strategic expansion for family firm as industrial suppliers set up shop in Aycliffe

September 17th, 2025 Martin Walker Business 0 comments 0

A fasteners and industrial supplies business with a proud family history is investing in the future by expanding to Aycliffe Business Park.

Masfix, a North East-based company with more than four decades of heritage, has opened a brand new 5,000 sq ft facility at Station Place on Aycliffe Business Park following a £150,000 investment.

The move marks a significant milestone for the business, which will stock £1m-worth of products across its two premises, and is part of a wider strategy to support growing demand from existing customers in the region while laying foundations for future growth.

Masfix has created three full-time roles as part of the expansion, appointing warehouse supervisors Gavin Gent, James Campbell and Cameron Liddle.

The facility is backed by daily deliveries from the company’s Newburn headquarters, ensuring businesses across County Durham have fast and convenient access to an unparalleled range of stock.

“We’ve been planning this for some time,” explains Ian Mordue, one of the company’s directors and owners along with Mark Slater.

“We identified Aycliffe Business Park as a key growth area, and this is a strategic move for us.

“We’re already dealing with a number of well-established firms here, including Tekmar, Ebac and BTS Fabrications, so it made sense to have a permanent base here to better serve those customers and build new relationships.”

Masfix stocks more than 30,000 products and carries over 25 million parts across its operation.

From nuts, bolts and fixings to tools, safety equipment, PPE and bespoke-engineered parts, the company offers an unrivalled breadth of supply – all underpinned by a reputation for quality, speed and customer service.

“There aren’t many businesses in the region who can offer what we do, with such immediate availability,” says sales director Richard Ward.

“We pride ourselves on our service, the range we carry and our ability to respond quickly to our customers’ needs.”

Masfix’s offering goes well beyond stock supply. One of the company’s most exciting innovations in recent years is its vendor-managed inventory service, which sees vending machines installed directly into customers’ premises.

The machines, tailored to individual client requirements, are refilled automatically based on usage data – reducing downtime, saving money and simplifying stock control.

“It’s a modern, cost-effective way for businesses to access the parts they need,” Richard adds.

“Instead of leaving site or managing complex orders, our clients have immediate access to what they use regularly.

“It keeps operations running smoothly and allows them to focus on their work, not their supply chains.”

The move to Aycliffe represents not just an expansion, but a homecoming of sorts for the business.

Masfix was founded back in 1982 by George Mordue and Ron Slater (Ian and Mark’s fathers) – a true family affair that has grown steadily through the years.

“It’s a really proud moment,” says Mark.

“Our fathers set this up over 40 years ago. They started with an empty unit, not much stock, and a lot of belief.

“This expansion almost turns the clock back – but this time we’ve got the benefit of experience, great facilities and strong foundations.

“We’ve moved into one of the newest developments on the business park with shelves full of stock and a clear idea of where we want to go next.

“It’s a massive development for Masfix and a huge opportunity – and we’re really proud to be here.”

Sadly, George Mordue passed away several years ago, but his legacy lives on in the values and vision that continue to drive the business.

“My father is 84 now and he still asks how things are going every time I see him,” Mark adds.

“He’s incredibly proud, and I think he’d be blown away by what we’re doing now.”

The Aycliffe operation will be overseen by Rebecca Head, a key account manager with strong links to the area and a deep understanding of the local business community.

Masfix initially opened a satellite office at The Work Place to test the waters and get a feel for the opportunities available in the region.

“The Work Place was a fantastic launchpad for us,” says Rebecca.

“It allowed the directors to gauge the potential here, get to know the area better and make informed decisions before committing to the expansion.

“Now, with this new facility, we’re ready to take things to the next level.

“We understand the landscape here in Aycliffe – there’s a real sense of community, and we’re looking forward to cementing our place within that and building strong relationships with even more businesses on the park.”

With its modern facility, dedicated team and a product range that’s second to none, Masfix is confident its Aycliffe presence will add value to businesses across the region – whether they’re existing customers or new ones looking for reliable supply, responsive service and long-term partnership.

“We’re modernising the way companies source their stock,” says Mark.

“This is about making the process faster, easier and more cost-effective. We want Aycliffe businesses to know that we’re here, that we’re ready to help, and that we can deliver what they need, when they need it.”

With 30,000 products in stock and the infrastructure in place to support fast local deliveries and bespoke solutions, Masfix’s Aycliffe expansion is a bold statement of intent.

“We’re excited to be part of the business park,” Ian concludes.

“It’s a great environment with some fantastic businesses – and we’re looking forward to growing with them.”
