Station Park is ‘major deal for Aycliffe’, says councillor

June 29th, 2018 Martin Walker Business 0 comments 0

A leading councillor has labelled a potential new multi-million-pound development for Newton Aycliffe as a “major deal”.

As revealed exclusively by Aycliffe Today last week, Merchant Anglo – the company behind Merchant Park, home to Hitachi’s £82m factory which opened three years ago – is now planning to build three new units near to the rail manufacturing facility covering a total 25 acres.

The new Station Place development will provide much-needed high-quality industrial units from 5,000 sq ft.

It’s hoped the three units – one up to 193,000 sq ft (8.55 acres), one up to 82,000 sq ft (3.2 acres) and the third up to 312,000 sq ft (13 acres) – will be available by summer/autumn 2019.

Councillor John Clare – a prominent Durham County councillor as well as an Aycliffe town councillor – told Aycliffe Today: “This is a major deal for Newton Aycliffe.

“As I always say, the business park puts the food on our tables, and to see Geoff Hunton and his team coming back here is fantastic.

“The message seems to be if they build the units, people will come, so we’re looking at firm hopes for the future here.

“Anyone who can bring Hitachi, with all the competition they had from other parts of the country, can only be bringing a firm and sensible offer.

“A lot of market research has already gone into it, so it’s hopeful and it has huge potential. We need to give them all the support to help make it happen.”
