Students from Greenfield Community College have earned many sporting achievements over the last few months, and despite the school closure due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the school is celebrating a good year for sports.
Greenfield Community College run an extended programme of lunchtime and after-school opportunities with a diverse range of activities including football, netball, rugby, gymnastics, handball, boxercise, table-tennis and badminton.
The netball season was a great success with teams working together to achieve their goals. Some outstanding performances highlight their hard work and dedication: Year 9 A team have been unbeaten all season winning the South West Durham Schools Netball league for a 2nd Year.
The Boccia and Basketball teams were successful in the Sedgefield School Sport Partnership, Year 9 Boccia team came away with gold medals securing a place at the county qualifying event after finishing in 1st place, while the basketball team achieved a well-deserved silver medal.
Individual praise goes to Year 8 student Jayden who finished 1st in the South West Durham Championships at Barnard Castle, qualifying to represent South West Durham in the County Championships.
“These are just a few of the many sporting achievements,” says the school.

Greenfield has formed a strong alliance with professional clubs and individuals. Former professional footballer and manager Martin Gray runs a number of training sessions at Greenfield and the school work with Sunderland’s Foundation of Light, local tennis, basketball and netball clubs to inspire and offer young people to specialise in their chosen sport.
“The facilities are well used by the school and the community and the school are looking forward to welcoming back students, teams and clubs later in the year,” added the school.
