May 13th, 2012 Martin Walker News 4 comments 0

By Martin Walker

The old Southerne Club building was finally demolished this week after standing derelict for years.

The site on Hawkshead Place is now being cleared, to make way for a new care home.

See our gallery of pictures showing the demolished site

Chester-le-Street-based Gainford Care Homes, which built and owns Lindisfarne Care Home on Silverdale Place, is planning the new development.

Aycliffe Today will bring you more about this exciting new project soon.

Pictured below is how the old Southerne Club used to look.

Will miss the place, grew up around it in the 70s. my mum Iris worked behind the bar. And my dad did the Staff Taxis. He probably took a few people home from there too. (Johns Taxis).

And what about The Southern Club boys football team, we had some good times in Airdree and also playin 5 a side footy at simpasture park in our Green an White strips

    RIP The Southern Club

another nursing home in the silverdale area, that has 2 already, when theres one sitting empty on the horndale estate ? surely renovation is cheaper than new-build. the site would be better suited to social housing !
