PCP’s BIG DIG DAY

March 14th, 2014 Aycliffe Today Reporter Community, News 0 comments 0

Big Dig boards

PCP are encouraging people to get involved in the nation’s biggest community gardening volunteering event, The Big Dig.

On Friday 21st March, 10am-1pm, Pioneering Care Partnership (PCP) are opening its community garden gates and getting it ready for the new growing season.

If you’re enthusiastic about gardening, or would just like to join in and make a difference in your local community, come along to this worthwhile event.

The Big Dig will be the launch of PCP’s vision to develop a socially inclusive community garden set in the grounds of the Pioneering Care Centre.

The garden is a good size with grassed areas, flower beds, water features, pleasant seating and an allotment. On the day volunteers will be helping to clear the site, getting it ready for people to enjoy the outdoor space this spring and summer. Refreshments and tools will be provided and helpers can take away their very own seed pots.

There will be an opportunity to chat to Horticultural Specialist Howard Leslie, who will be delivering PCP’s new project Plot to Plate, starting on Wednesday 2 April.

The ‘Plot to Plate’ project is an excellent opportunity for people living in Newton Aycliffe and Middridge to gain practical ‘hands on’ experience in growing a variety of vegetables, cultivating fruit/herbs, meeting new people and much more.

The 16-week course is free with thanks to Great Aycliffe and Middridge Area Partnership’s (GAMPs) ‘Your Money, Your Area, Your Views’ Community Grants Fund.

Participants will discover the many benefits growing food can have on the health and wellbeing of individuals and their communities. These include improved physical health from increased activity, feeling better from being outside, new friendships, new skills, healthy eating of own grown produce and saving money by growing own produce.

If you have as little as half an hour to spare and would like to get involved in the Big Dig Event, your help would be gratefully appreciated. Or to find out more about the Plot to Plate project please come along on Friday 21 March between 10am-1pm to the Pioneering Care Centre, Carer’s Way, Newton Aycliffe DL5 4SF. Or contact PCP on 01325 321234 email [email protected]. Further information is also on PCP’s website: pcp.uk.net and Facebook page: /PCPandCentre
