OVERTURNED CAR MAN IN COURT

A man who took a car without its owner’s consent and caused it to overturn has appeared before magistrates in Newton Aycliffe today.

As reported by The Northern Echo, Scott Hilton, 25, of Oakfield in the town, Newton Aycliffe, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking and driving with no insurance or license.

Prosecuting, David Maddison said the victim had been at a party at Rufus Road in Newton Aycliffe during the early hours of December 8 when he heard a loud noise outside.

“He discovered his vehicle upside down on its roof,” said Mr Maddison. “A car nearby had also suffered some damage.”

Mr Maddison said Hilton’s mobile phone was found inside the car.

The victim’s car, a Vauxhall Astra worth around £350, was written off. The damage to the other car is estimated at £400.

No mitigation was given but the court that how Hilton had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and worked hard as a self-employed roofer.

Hilton was sentenced to 160 hours unpaid work and was disqualified from driving for 12 months.

He was also ordered to pay £400 compensation and £85 court costs.
