Time is running out to secure your spot at the North East’s most exhilarating obstacle course.
On Sunday September 30, Muddy Mayhem, organised by Durham County Council, is back at Hardwick Park for its fifth year.
The challenging 10k race is now sold out and the 5k is not far behind with only afternoon slots available.
Anyone who wishes to join in the fun is encouraged to book up quickly to avoid disappointment.
Ross Carrick, senior parks and countryside ranger, was part of the team that designed and built the course.
He said: “The course is built by a team of skilled rangers and volunteers and takes around six weeks to build. It is a massive team effort and takes a lot of hard work, time and dedication by everyone involved, but the results speak for themselves.”
Competitors climb and jump their way around the 5km circuit that features elements of horse trials, motocross, rock climbing, military obstacle courses and adventure playgrounds and incorporates over 40 man-made and natural obstacles.
Ross added: “We have come on leaps and bounds from the days of using a few cargo nets, pallets and tyres. We now have structures such as the monkey bars, wall walk, mangle, and bell ringer.
“These are complex, large scale obstacles that need to be well designed, well built and most importantly safe for everyone involved in the event.
“The course also needs to be well tested, which always encourages a bit of friendly competition and is good for a few laughs, which is exactly what you’ll have if you take part in the event. Remember, this is no walk in the park.”
Everyone from professionals to amateurs is welcome to take part as long they’re aged 16 or over and have a reasonable level of fitness. However, nobody gets left behind as race marshals will be available to give a helping hand to anyone struggling with an obstacle.
The event is scheduled to begin at 10am with the runners setting off in waves every twenty minutes until 2pm.
Registration for the 5k course costs £43 and closes on Wednesday 19 September.
