Phil Wilson has praised Newton Aycliffe’s team of Labour councillors who steamrolled to victory in last week’s local elections.

Labour candidates John Clare, Eddie Adam, Kate Hopper, Mike Dixon, Jed Hillary, Joan Gray and Sarah Iveson all won seats in the Durham County Council election.

It represented an embarrassing defeat for Independent candidates such as Paul Gittins, Dorothy Bowman, George Gray and Bill Blenkinsopp.

Mr Wilson, the MP for Sedgefield, said: “The election results in Durham were excellent for Labour.

“We have a good team of Labour councillors in Aycliffe and for the first time ever, Labour now has two County Councillors in Sedgefield, taking a seat off the Conservatives.

“We have a strong team and I’ll continue to work with them for the benefit of the local community.”
