Independent committee members sought to help council maintain high standards

January 15th, 2024 Martin Walker News 0 comments 0

A committee that helps to maintain high standards of governance and financial management at Durham County Council is seeking two new members.

Applications are now open for two Independent Person Posts on the local authority’s Audit Committee, which advises the council and its Cabinet on audit and governance issues.

Working alongside elected councillors, the two independent members will join the committee in reviewing the council’s internal processes, risk assessments and financial management and reporting procedures.

The aim is to ensure these processes remain robust, effective and transparent, and to maintain public confidence.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate high ethical standards, a willingness to take part in meetings and the ability to form independent, unbiased and objective views on evidence and complex documentation.

Experience of financial management would also be helpful, along with an understanding of corporate governance and working within a large organisation.

The positions are fixed for three years, from April 2024 until April 2027, and successful candidates are required to attend five to six meetings at County Hall in Durham City each year.

A full induction and training will be given and, while the roles are unpaid, reasonable travel expenses can be claimed.

Tracy Henderson, chief internal auditor and corporate fraud manager at Durham County Council, said: “The council has a duty to ensure internal processes, including how we manage and report on our finances, are robust and highly effective.

“This is key to the smooth day-to-day running of the council and the effective delivery of public services, as well as ensuring the council gains the best value for the money it spends.

“The Independent Persons play an important part in helping the council to fulfil this duty, drawing on their own skills, knowledge and experiences to assist the Audit Committee in its role.”

To find out more about the posts and to request an application pack, please contact Ian Croft, committee services team leader, on 03000 269 702 or [email protected]

The closing date for applications is 11:59pm on Friday 23 February and interviews will be held during week commencing March 18, 2024.
