Help Aycliffe students raise cash for once-in-a-lifetime Thailand trip

July 2nd, 2018 Martin Walker Community 0 comments 0

Woodham Academy students are raising funds for a once-in-a-lifetime volunteering trip to Thailand.

Following a rigorous application process, 14 Woodham Academy students have been selected to take part in the school’s first Thailand Experience.

The new initiative will see the Key Stage 4 students volunteer in an elephant sanctuary, visit historical sites and experience a different way of life.

Teacher Hannah Kent said: “This is a unique opportunity for our students to develop leadership skills, and grow in confidence.

“All are required to raise funds for the trip, and have a number of fundraising activities planned.

“We hope the community will support them and enable them to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

An integral part of the experience is a full week volunteering in an elephant sanctuary, where students will learn to care for the animals, including feeding, walking and bathing.

Students will also develop an understanding of the history of Thailand. They will explore Bangkok and Chaing Mai, take guided tours of the Grand Palace and the Reclining Buddha Temple.

During the visit – planned for July 2019 – they will visit the bridge over the River Kwai, the war cemetery and museum, and ride along the Burma Railway.

Any donations towards the experience will be greatly appreciated and will be divided equally between all participating students.
