Youngsters in Newton Aycliffe can fill up the first half-term break of the year with a range of sports organised by Durham County Council.

The “Your Sport Your Patch” activities on offer (Monday 16th February to Friday 20th February) include a junior training camp with the Durham Wildcats basketball team, cricket, netball and football.

In addition to these open events there is also a one-day Durham Doorstep Clubs Sports Festival at Spennymoor Leisure Centre.

It follows the success of the inaugural festival last year where 60 invited youngsters got the chance to take part in a range of sports that otherwise may have not been available to them.

The activities range from volleyball and dodgeball to street soccer and dance.

It has been organised by Durham County Council’s culture and sport team in partnership with the One Point Youth Service.

John Walker, sports development project officer, Durham County Council, said: “Festivals like the Doorstep Club Festival give young people from disadvantaged communities the chance to take part in a variety of physical activities and help with motivation and confidence to continue being active.

“We are also delighted to encourage other young people to be active during the half-term holidays with the other events we have arranged.”

The events are:

Monday 16 February: Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre – Durham Wildcats Junior Training Camps (10am-4pm).

Tuesday 17 February: Spennymoor Leisure Centre – Doorstep Clubs Sports Festival (11am -5pm).

Wednesday 18 February: Spennymoor Leisure Centre – Open Indoor Under-16 Football Tournament (2pm -5pm).

Thursday 19 February: Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre – Open Under- 16 Indoor Cricket Competition (10am -5pm).

Friday 20 February: Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre – Girls Open Indoor Netball Tournament (10am-4.30pm).

Places are available by calling John Walker on 03000 266 751.
