EYE IN THE SKY GIVES UNIQUE VIEW OF SPORTS VILLAGE

An eye in the sky is capturing a unique view of the rapid development of the new Middlesbrough Sports Village, which has been constructed using Aycliffe steel.

Dramatic aerial shots give a bird’s eye view of the new 400m track and Sports Hub – built by Aycliffe firm Finley Structures – which are the focal points of the £18m complex off Marton Road in the town.

The shots were taken by contractor Willmott Dixon using a remote-controlled portable drone device which flies over the site with an on-board camera.

The pictures are helping to chart the progress of the Sports Village development which will feature an athletics stadium, fitness gym, sports hall, indoor sprint track, full size floodlit synthetic turf pitch and five-a-side pitches.

Peter Gleave, Operations Director for Willmott Dixon, said: “We use the drone on many of our projects, we feel it is vital to keep our clients and the local community informed of progress on the site from a different perspective.”

The main hub, external areas and car park are due for completion in April, while work on a new 250m outdoor velodrome is also due to start next year.

Councillor Charlie Rooney, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, said: “The new Sports Village is taking shape at a fantastic rate, and it’s really starting to capture the imagination of the public.

“It’s a truly state-of-the-art centre of excellence, and these aerial pictures really help to show the scale of what is being achieved.

“It is going to be a fantastic facility and it’s great to be able to chart its transformation from building site to a centre of regional and national importance.”
