Dive into fun this summer

August 8th, 2019 Martin Walker News 0 comments 0

Those looking for splash-tastic activities to keep kids entertained this summer need to look no further than their local leisure centre.

There are plenty of activities on offer at Durham County Council leisure centres this August – from snorkelling to learning to swim there is something for every child to enjoy.

Swimming crash courses and skill improvement sessions help children build their confidence in the pool. Children will take part in a week of swimming lessons focused on developing their swimming skills and stroke techniques.

The courses cost £23 per week and are available at Aycliffe Leisure Centre as well as Chester-le-Street, Consett, The Louisa Centre at Stanley, Teesdale Leisure Centre and Woodhouse Close Leisure Complex.

For children interested in discovering what is beneath the water, fin and snorkelling sessions teach the basics of swimming with fins and snorkels and are available from £3.60 at Aycliffe, Spennymoor Teesdale Leisure Centre.

Holiday pool timetables mean there is more time for swimming pool fun sessions. Suitable for all ages the family sessions featuring rafts and floats are a great way to keep the whole family entertained. For little ones aged up to eight-years-old sessions take place in the small pool and for older children in the main pool. The sessions are available at all leisure centres with a pool. Normal admission charges apply.

Young people aged between two and six can join Brock the Badger and his friends for Ready, Sett, Splash sessions, which include 30 minutes of instructor-led fun and 30 minutes of free play. The sessions are available at Aycliffe and Woodhouse Close Leisure Complex. They cost £4for one adult and one child and any additional children pay £1 each.

Older children, aged from eight to 14, can take on pool based inflatable challenges to see who can make it to the other side without getting wet.

Available at Aycliffe, Chester-le-Street, The Louisa Centre, Teesdale and Woodhouse Close. Normal admission charges apply.

Kaye Stephenson, Durham County Council’s principal aquatics manager, said: “Whatever the weather, our wide range of pool activities provides a fantastic way to keep your family healthy, happy and active this summer.”
