December 20th, 2017 Martin Walker News 0 comments 0

Council staff are celebrating after scooping a top prize at a national awards ceremony.

Durham County Council’s Building and Facilities Maintenance team was announced as Most Improved Performer in Building Maintenance at the 2017 APSE Performance Networks Awards in Blackpool.

The awards, which were presented by radio presenter Lorna Bancroft, recognise those who show exceptional commitment to frontline government services, promoting excellence and continuous improvement.

The Building and Facilities Maintenance team was recognised for improvements including its commitment to Health and Safety excellence and work in relation to project and people management.

Paul Burr, building and facilities maintenance manager at Durham County Council, said: “We are delighted to have picked up this national award which recognises the hard work and dedication of the full team.

“The judges have recognised the innovative ways in which we manage our properties and maintenance activities, ensuring that our customers are at the heart of everything we do. Our building repairs and compliance systems are known across the north east for providing an outstanding solution to a critical business need.

“Our frontline repairs and maintenance teams deserve to be commended for the quality service they provide day-in day-out, and their achievements have been recognised in relation to health and safety, quality and efficiency.”

The council provides a wide range of buildings and facilities maintenance services to businesses across County Durham and the north east, from building compliance to construction.

It also provides a range of services to maintain and improve properties as well as supporting customers in managing business premises to ensure safe and compliant places of work for staff and visitors.

APSE Chief Executive Paul O’Brien said: “The winners and finalists of these awards are stunning examples of what local government is capable of achieving.

“That is not to say austerity is not hitting councils hard because it is, however these winners and finalists are proof that in spite of the challenges local authorities are using innovation and efficiency to continue to deliver superb local service.”
