durham county council

Councillors will be asked to agree an extra £52m of investment when they meet next week – bringing Durham County Council’s total capital programme up to 2017 to £366m.

The money will help to fund road improvements, new schools and town centre development in County Durham.

Members of Durham County Council’s Cabinet will discuss the proposals when they consider the authority’s 2015/16 budget on Wednesday, 11th February.

Cllr Simon Henig, Leader of Durham County Council, said: “Although the council faces the challenge of significant funding reductions from government the need to continue to invest in the county’s infrastructure is vitally important.

“This investment will maintain and improve infrastructure across the county, helping to secure existing jobs whilst also creating new jobs.”

The total capital investment programme of £366m includes:

• £93m for building new schools while also improving and maintaining current school buildings
• £101m for maintaining and improving the highway network
• £18m for Broadband infrastructure
• £14m for industrial estates across the county
• £8m for town centre renewal
