Best friends raise enough cash for three wigs

September 21st, 2015 Martin Walker News 0 comments 0

Young Newtonians Lucie Lambert and Leah Banks have raised more than £1,100 from a charity hair-cut – enough cash to make three wigs for cancer victims.

The 10-year-old Byerley Park pupils have already smashed their original target of raising £350, which would be enough to fund one wig for the Little Princess Trust, while the hair they’ve had cut today will also be donated to the charity.

Leah (pictured, above, right) saw a leaflet in a local hairdresser’s advertising the Little Princess Trust, a national charity which provides real hair wigs to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland that have lost their own hair through cancer treatment.

After talking to her friend Lucie, the youngsters decided to get have their hair cut and donate it to the trust while also setting up a Just Giving fundraising page.

“We just wanted to help,” said Leah.

“We saw a leaflet for the Little Princess Trust and we just got talking about it and then we thought we could try to raise some money as well.”

They started off with a target of raising £350, but their online total is already double that, currently standing at £630, while off-line donations currently totalling £487 tops up their overall effort to £1,117.

The money raised will provide the Little Princess Trust with enough cash to make three full wigs for young cancer victims, while their locks will also be donated to the charity.

“We both love our new hair!” said Lucie, after having it trimmed at the Stephen Russel salon in Aycliffe town centre.

“We’re both very happy that we’ve been able to raise lots of money which will make three wigs for people our age who have cancer.”

Lucie’s mum Liz added: “We’re all very proud of both of them.

“The girls started talking about helping children who needed wigs so they decided to do this and it’s just nice to see two young children being so selfless, thinking of others and raising lots of money for a lovely cause.”
