Aycliffe school youngsters enjoy ‘Sparkies’ sessions at Woodham

February 28th, 2019 Martin Walker Community 0 comments 0

Primary students have been enjoying after-school science sessions at Woodham Academy.

With one session every half-term, Woodham ‘Sparkies’ gives students in Years 5 and 6 the opportunity to mix with students from other primary schools whilst taking part in fascinating science activities.

So far, over 50 students have taken advantage of the free sessions, with students attending from over seven local primary schools.

In the sessions so far, the students have been enthused with various aspects of science including chemical reactions, Space and the biology of making bread.

To complete their science activities, students have an opportunity to work in the science laboratories at Woodham Academy – an exciting environment for primary students.

Each session includes a 15-minute break for juice and biscuits, giving the students time to socialise with students from different primary schools.

The sessions are run by Mr Scott, a science teacher at Woodham Academy with help from other science colleagues.

Mr Scott said: “Sparkies is an engaging and hands on science club for year 5 and 6 students.

“It lets pupils explore science in a fun way, utilising Woodham Academy’s scientific equipment, and encourages curiosity.

“With subject specialists on hand, pupils can ask those tricky science questions and have the answer demonstrated by an expert.”

The next Sparkies session, ‘The Chemistry Bake Off’, is on March 13 (4-5.30pm) and, as always, is free of charge.
