Lee Weldon’s weekly round-up from the wicket…

Saturday 12th July – NYSD Division 3

Newton Aycliffe 1st XI v Maltby 1st XI – the weather was very hot and sunny. Maltby won the toss and chose to bowl first.

Newton Aycliffe 1st XI 106 all out after 29 overs
Shashank Garg 20, Jai Sander 14 and Matty Greaves 13

Maltby 1st XI 107 for 3 after 19.2 overs
Tom Dearden 1 for 11, Matty Greaves 1 for 19 and Will Dearden 1 for 34

Aycliffe’s first team were beaten by seven wickets at home to promotion favourites Maltby 1sts asked to bat first, Aycliffe were bowled out for just 106 with all of the Aycliffe batsmen struggling to score runs on a tricky wicket.

However, Shashank Garg managed to find some form when he top scored with 20 off 34 balls, reaching the boundary on four occasions. Makeshift opener Jai Sander also deserved credit scoring 14 runs from 50 balls against two very lively Maltby opening bowlers.

In reply, the visitors coasted to victory with more than 31 overs in hand, despite a wicket each for Matty Greaves (sponsored by Britannia Fire), Tom Dearden and his younger brother Will.

The defeat drops Aycliffe down from third to fourth in the third division table with 185 points from 13 games played.

Saturday 12th July – NYSD Division 4

Billingham Synthonia 2nd XI v Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI – the weather was very hot and sunny. Newton Aycliffe won the toss and chose to bowl first.

Billingham Synthonia 2nd XI 205 for 4 declared after 32 overs
Jon Tait 2 for 52, Freddie Lawler 1 for 33 and Liam Scott 1 for 54

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI 39 all out after 29.4 overs
Matty French 15

The young Aycliffe 2nd team were well beaten by 166 runs away at runaway league leaders Billingham Synthonia 2nds.

Choosing to bowl first, Aycliffe struggled to contain the homeside batsmen as they raced to 205 for 4 declared despite Jon Tait having some success with the ball, finishing with 2 for 52 from his long ten over spell, his first wickets for the club.

In reply, Aycliffe were skittled for their lowest score of the season, reaching just 39 off 29.4 overs with only opener batsman Matty French (pictured above) showing any resistance, with a truly defiant 15 runs off 84 balls faced, including two boundaries.
