Lee Weldon’s weekly round-up from the wicket…

Saturday 31st August – NYSD Division 2

Newton Aycliffe 1st XI v Shildon 1st XI – weather was warm and sunny. Newton Aycliffe won the toss and chose to bat first.

Newton Aycliffe 1st XI 210 all out after 46.1 overs
Sam Telford 63, Adam Gittins 52 and James Layfield-Carroll 27

Shildon 1st XI 130 all out after 33.2 overs
Luke Telford 5 for 25, James Layfield-Carroll 2 for 28 and Ben Howard 2 for 29

The first team gave themselves an outside chance of avoiding relegation after an impressive 80 run victory at home to promotion candidates and local rivals Shildon 1st XI.
Sam Telford batted superbly for Aycliffe, smashing the bowling to all parts of the ground when he scored 63 off just 31 balls and his aggressive innings included seven boundaries and four sixes.
Luke Telford (sponsored by JR Smith Electrical Services) then took the honours with the ball finishing with the excellent figures of 5 for 25 from 10.2 overs.
The day was made even more special for Luke Telford when his 13 year old son Trent was drafted in to the team to make his first team debut and the youngster put in a faultless display in the field.
After 20 games, the first team have 180 points and remain 2nd bottom of the NYSD 2nd division table, but the gap behind 3rd from bottom Stockton has now been cut to 31 points, but there are only two games left to play.

Saturday 31st August – NYSD Division 4

Preston 1st XI v Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI – weather was warm and sunny. Preston won the toss and chose to bat first.

Preston 1st XI 174 for 6 after 40 overs
Will Moffatt 2 for 35, Jimmy Newton 1 for 8 and Matty Greaves 1 for 20

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI 130 all out after 33.1 overs
Jai Sander 64 not out, Adam Shaw 21 and Matty Greaves 13

The club’s second team lost by 44 runs away at Preston 1st XI in the NYSD 4th division.
There was an outstanding performance by Aycliffe’s opening batsman Jai Sander (sponsored by Armstrong Building Services) who carried his bat for a season’s best score of 64 not out off 89 balls and his innings included ten boundaries.
Fourteen-year-old Will Moffatt took the honours with the ball finishing with 2 for 35 from his six over spell.
Special mention must go to 16-year-old Isabelle Tait who made her senior debut in the 2nd team and proved an able deputy for her Dad who had dropped out before the match due to injury.
After 22 games, the second team have 183 points and drop to 10th place in the fourth division table and have just two games remaining this season.
