Lee Weldon’s weekly round-up from the wicket…

Saturday 29th July – NYSD Division 2

Marton 2nd XI v Newton Aycliffe 1st XI – weather was cool and breezy. Newton Aycliffe won the toss and chose to bowl first.

Marton 2nd XI 205 for 9 after 50 overs
Matty Greaves 3 for 33, Luke Telford 2 for 38 and James Layfield-Carroll 2 for 68

Newton Aycliffe 1st XI 74 all out after 27.4 overs
Luke Telford 45 and James Layfield-Carroll 11

Newton Aycliffe’s 1st team were comfortably beaten by 131 runs away at Marton 2nd XI after a below par performance. However despite the defeat, Luke Telford (sponsored by Dean and Tina Greaves) had an excellent individual performance with bat, ball and fielding. Firstly Telford took 2 for 38 from ten overs in the Marton innings and also held on to a couple of catches and ran out one of the homeside’s batsmen. Then when Aycliffe batted, he top scored with an excellent 45 off 85 balls and his innings included six boundaries.
Aycliffe picked up five bonus points from their defeat at Marton, which takes their points total to 180 from 16 games played and remain in seventh place in the NYSD 2nd division table.

Saturday 29th July – NYSD Division 4

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI v Skelton Castle 1st XI – weather was cool and breezy. Skelton won the toss and chose to bat first.

Skelton Castle 1st XI 157 for 9 after 40 overs
Ramzan Hussain 3 for 15, Tom Dearden 3 for 24, and Jimmy Newton 2 for 11

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI 160 for 1 after 27.2 overs
Tom Dearden 73, Patrick Howe 54 not out and Dan Bowmer 8 not out

Aycliffe’s 2nd team put in an excellent performance to beat Skelton Castle 1st XI by nine wickets in their NYSD 4th division match. 16 year old Tom Dearden (sponsored by Kevin Burton) continued his superb recent form with another all round match winning display. The talented youngster finished with 3 for 24 off his ten over spell in the visitors innings and he then top scored in the Aycliffe reply with 73 off 68 balls, including nine boundaries and two sixes. Special mention must also go to Patrick Howe who opened the innings with Dearden and the pair set a new 2nd team club record for the 1st wicket partnership off 147. Howe batted through to score his first senior half century finishing unbeaten on 54 off 92 balls and he reached the boundary on five occasions.

Sunday 30th July – NYSD Division 4

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI v Bedale 2nd XI – weather was cool and breezy. Bedale won the toss and chose to bowl first.

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI 162 all out after 35.5 overs

Bedale 2nd XI 164 for 7 after 39.1 overs
Ramzan Hussain 2 for 15, Leo Stout 2 for 31 and Will Dearden 1 for 17

Aycliffe’s 2nd XI were unable to follow up their win from the previous day and were beaten in a close game by just three wickets at home to Bedale 2nd XI. There were two excellent performances with the bat from 16-year-olds Dan Heaton (sponsored by Ian “Hatty” Hannant, pictured above) and Tom Dearden.

Heaton scored 60 runs from 47 balls and his aggressive innings included nine boundaries and three sixes. Dearden hit his second half century of the weekend, this time scoring 53 from 56 balls faced, reaching the boundary on eight occasions.
