Lee Weldon’s weekly round-up from the wicket…

Saturday 15th July – NYSD Division 2

Newton Aycliffe 1st XI v Saltburn 2nd XI – weather was cool with heavy showers. Saltburn won the toss and chose to bat first. Match sponsored by Unison

Saltburn 2nd XI 204 all out after 48.3 overs
James Layfield-Carroll 3 for 32, Matty Greaves 3 for 44 and Luke Telford 3 for 61

Because of stoppages due to heavy rain, the Duckworth-Lewis calculation was used to set Aycliffe a revised target of 157 runs to win in 31 overs.

Newton Aycliffe 1st XI 158 for 9 after 30.1 overs
James Layfield-Carroll 61 not out, Chris Palmer 42, Adam Gittins 14 and Joe Teasdale 14.

Newton Aycliffe’s 1st team won a thrilling game by just one wicket in the final over at home to Saltburn 2nd XI thanks to a brilliant all round performance by vice captain James Layfield-Carroll (sponsored by Yvonne and Bob Wood).

Layfield-Carroll (pictured above) was the pick of the bowlers when the visitors batted, taking a superb 3 for 32 from 15 overs. When Aycliffe replied, he came to the crease with his side in trouble at 76 for 5 and proceeded to smash the Saltburn bowling to all parts of the ground in an awesome display of powerhouse batting. Layfield-Carroll reached his first ever half century off just 22 balls, just missing the club record by two balls and eventually finished with an unbeaten career best score of 61 from just 25 balls faced, including five boundaries and six maximums, to help his side to a tense one wicket victory with just five balls of the innings remaining.

Aycliffe picked up the maximum 25 points from their dramatic victory, which takes their points total to 163 from 13 games played and they move up to sixth place in the NYSD 2nd division table.

Saturday 15th July – NYSD Division 4

Marske 2nd XI v Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI – weather was cool with heavy showers. Aycliffe won the toss and chose to bat first.

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI 133 all out after 37 overs
Jimmy Newton 30, Matty French 28 and Patrick Howe 23

The umpires were forced to abandon Newton Aycliffe’s second team game away at Marske 2nds after Aycliffe had completed their innings, when heavy rain prevented any further play.
The second team did however still manage to pick up nine bonus points from the game, taking their points total to 158 from 14 games played, but they drop down a place to seventh in the NYSD fourth division table.
