Lee Weldon with his weekly round-up from the wicket…

Saturday 29th June – NYSD Division 2

Hartlepool 2nd XI v Newton Aycliffe 1st XI – weather was hot and sunny. Hartlepool won the toss and chose to bowl first.

Newton Aycliffe 1st XI 177 all out after 49.2 overs
Lewis Gimple 39, Sam Telford 37 and Adam Gittins 21

Hartlepool 2nd XI 142 all out after 40.4 overs
James Layfield-Carroll 5 for 50, Patrick Howe 3 for 29 and Michael Howe 2 for 23,

Aycliffe’s first team picked up their first 25-point victory of the season after an deserved win away at Hartlepool 2nd XI. Fast bowler James Layfield-Carroll (sponsored by Signature Tiling, pictured above) deserves credit for managing to get through 13 overs in such hot and humid conditions and he was quite rightly rewarded with the superb figures of 5 for 50 from his 13 overs. This much needed win pushes Aycliffe up to 8th in the NYSD 2nd division table with 136 points from 12 games played.

Saturday 29th June – NYSD Division 4

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI v Maltby 2nd XI – weather was hot and sunny. Aycliffe won the toss and chose to bowl first.

Maltby 2nd XI 127 all out after 28.1 overs
Jack Slatcher 6 for 25, Matty Greaves 2 for 4 and David Robinson 1 for 4

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI 128 for 8 after 35.4 overs
Jack Slatcher 30, Dan Weldon 23 and George Slatcher 19

The second team had a dramatic two wicket victory at home to Maltby 2nd team. Jack Slatcher (sponsored by Dean and Tina Greaves) dropped down to the second team and had a tremendous game, firstly taking 6 for 25 in the Maltby innings and then top scoring with 30 in the Aycliffe reply.
Special mention must go to 14 year David Robinson (18 runs) and 15 year old Harry Wright (6 runs) for their excellent 7th wicket partnership of 28 runs, which was extremely vital in the context of the game. The pair batted with maturity beyond their years to rescue their side from 98 for 6 and take them to within two runs of victory before they were both dismissed. Thankfully the ninth wicket pair then scored the two runs required to take their side over the line in a tense finale.
As a result, the second team move up to eighth in the NYSD 4th division table with 78 points from ten games played.
