Lee Weldon kicks off the 2023 cricket season with his regular round-up from the wicket…

Saturday 29th April – NYSD Division 2

Saltburn 2nd XI v Newton Aycliffe 1st XI – weather was cloudy, damp and very cold. Newton Aycliffe won the toss and chose to bowl first.

Saltburn 2nd XI 215 for 9 after 50 overs
Luke Telford 4 for 58, Ramzan Hussain 3 for 35 and Leo Mercy 1 for 35

Newton Aycliffe 1st XI 87 all out after 33.5 overs
Joe Teasdale 50 and Owen Smith 14

The first team began the new season with a heavy defeat by 128 runs away at a bitterly cold and damp Saltburn. There were however some positives from the game, Joe Teasdale (pictured above) top scored with gritty half century from 80 balls faced, including three sixes and a single boundary and both Luke Teford (4 for 58) and Ramzan Hussain (3 for 35) bowled well in the difficult conditions.

Saturday 29th April – NYSD Division 4

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI v Marske 2nd XI – weather was cloudy, damp and very cold. Newton Aycliffe won the toss and chose to bat first.

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI 224 all out after 40 overs
Dan Heaton 49, Tom Dearden 40 and Adam Shaw 31

Marske 2nd XI 70 all out after 21.4 overs
Tom Dearden 4 for 40, Jimmy Newton 3 for 10 and Leo Stout 3 for 21

Newton Aycliffe’s young second team began their new their season with a fantastic victory by a massive 154 runs at home to Marske 2nd XI in the NYSD 4th division.
Sixteen-year-old Tom Dearden (sponsored by Kevin Burton) had a terrific game for Aycliffe, scoring 40 runs from 48 balls and he then took 4 for 40 from his excellent ten over spell of leg spin bowling.
Special mention must also go to 15 year old Dan Heaton who despite carrying a hip injury into the game, top scored with a career best 49 from 51 balls, including eight boundaries and a massive six and he later held on to four brilliant catches when the visitors replied.

Saturday 6th May at 1.30pm – NYSD Division 4 – Rockliffe Park 2nd XI v Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI
