Lee Weldon’s weekly round-up from the wicket…

Saturday 16th July – NYSD Division 2

Newton Aycliffe 1st XI v Maltby 1st XI – weather was hot and sunny. Newton Aycliffe won the toss and chose to bowl first.

Maltby 1st XI 230 all out after 39.2 overs
Matty Greaves 5 for 53, Luke Telford 2 for 18 and Sean Morgan 2 for 32

Newton Aycliffe 1st XI 126 all out after 30.1 overs
Matty Greaves 26, Sean Morgan 26 and Luke Telford 17

The first team’s recent slump in form continued with their fifth consecutive league defeat, this time losing at home to Maltby 1st XI by 104 runs.
Despite the heavy defeat, 17-year-old Matty Greaves (, pictured abovesponsored Britannia Fire) had an excellent game, firstly finishing with career best bowling figures of 5 for 53 from 10 overs of spin bowling and then when Aycliffe replied, he was joint top scorer with 26 runs off 39 balls hitting four boundaries in his innings.
Aycliffe still picked up seven bonus points from this defeat and they now have 172 points in total from 15 games played and drop down a place to ninth in the NYSD 2nd division table.

Saturday 16th July – NYSD Division 4

Guisborough 2nd XI v Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI – weather was hot and sunny. Newton Aycliffe won the toss and chose to bat first.

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI 94 all out after 25 overs
Harrison Pearson 37, Dan Bowmer 14

Guisborough 2nd XI 97 for 2 after 22.1 overs
Leo Mercy 1 for 19 and Dan Weldon 1 for 35

Newton Aycliffe’s young 2nd XI were no match for their more experienced opponents and were well beaten by eight wickets away at promotion hopefuls Guisborough 2nd XI.
15 year old Harrison Pearson (sponsored by Ian Hatty Hannant) batted well for Aycliffe when he top scored with a senior career best 37 off 41 balls and the youngster’s eye catching innings contained eight well hit boundaries.
Aycliffe’s 2nd XI picked up three bonus points from this defeat and they remain in 11th place in the table with 82 points from 12 games played.
