Lee Weldon’s weekly round-up from the wicket…

Saturday 28th May – NYSD Division 2

Darlington 2nd XI v Newton Aycliffe 1st XI – weather was sunny and mild. Darlington won the toss and chose to bat first.

Darlington 2nd XI 250 for 3 declared after 46 overs
James Layfield-Carroll 2 for 56 and Sam Telford 1 for 18

Newton Aycliffe 1st XI 143 all out after 29 overs
Owen Smith 33, Dan Weldon 22 and Sam Telford 21

Aycliffe’s 1st XI were well beaten away at Darlington by 107 runs. The bright spot of the game was a good innings by 16 year old Owen Smith (sponsored by Eileen Quinn) who scored a first team best score of 33 from 33 balls faced and included six boundaries.
This defeat leaves Aycliffe on 72 points after 7 games played and they remain just above the relegation places in 10th place in the table.

Saturday 28th May – NYSD Division 4

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI v Bedale 2nd XI – weather was sunny and mild. Newton Aycliffe won the toss and chose to bat first.

Newton Aycliffe 2nd XI 251 for 8 declared after 35.5 overs
Tom Dearden 128, Ryan Patrick 44 and Dan Bowmer 23

Bedale 2nd XI 108 all out after 35.1 overs
Tom Dearden 6 for 25, Will Dearden 2 for 17 and Harrison Pearson 1 for 22

Newton Aycliffe’s young 2nd XI, which had eight juniors in their ranks, put in an excellent performance to win their first game of the season at home to Bedale 2nd XI.
The day will be especially memorable for 15 year old Tom Dearden (sponsored by Kevin Burton, pictured above), who scored his first century, finishing with 128 runs from 97 balls, including twenty boundaries and then took a career best 6 for 26 from 11 overs in the visitor’s innings to help the 2nd team to victory by a massive 143 runs.
Tom became the youngest player in the club’s history to score a senior century and also became the first player in the club’s history to achieve the notable double of scoring a hundred and taking five wickets in the same match. A quite extraordinary performance from the vastly talented youngster.

This week’s only senior cricket fixture:
Saturday 4th June at 1.00pm – NYSD Division 2 – Newton Aycliffe 1st XI v Norton 1st XI
