Teesside pop singer Amelia Lily will switch on the Christmas lights in Newton Aycliffe this week as part of the town centre’s re-launch celebrations.

The 19-year-old X Factor star will sing five songs during an hour-long stint in Aycliffe shopping centre on Saturday (November 16).

Lily, from Middlesbrough, finished third in the 2011 X Factor competition and her debut single, You Bring Me Joy, reached number two in the UK Singles Chart.

Town centre manager Bryan Haldane said: “It’s a fantastic coup for Newton Aycliffe and we’re delighted to attract such a big name for what is an important celebration for Newton Aycliffe.

“We wanted someone who’d be well known locally, but also nationally, and Amelia fits the bill.”

The celebrations will mark the official re-launch of Aycliffe town centre, as its current £2m development nears completion.

As part of the day, Star Radio will present a live four-hour show in the town centre next Saturday, beginning at 1pm.

There will be performances by the Darlington Operatic Society, St Mary’s School Choir, local band North Road and local solo singers Oli Patto, Hayley McKay and Jack Millican.

Then Lily will take to the stage at about 4.30pm, when she will switch on the Christmas lights in between performances.

Just want to know what lights she is switching on as I have been to the Town Centre today and the only lights are from Coffee Pronto to Greggs and the 5 Xmas trees which are already switched on. Unless more lights are being erected can’t see the point of having a switch on.

She was great its just a shame there wasn’t a light turn on as they have been on most of the wk. The lights that r up are so poor I’m ashamed for my town. There is no lights up central avenue and what is in the town r boring, where r our lovely lights from last yr. The town is looking better we now need fair rents and new shops and then we can b proud
