ALDI STORE MAKING PROGRESS

July 4th, 2012 Martin Walker Business, News 1 comments 0

By Martin Walker

Newton Aycliffe’s newest superstore is making steady progress – as our picture shows.

The £1.5m Aldi store is expected to be open for business by early 2013, with construction of the steel frame of the shop now well under way.

The new Aldi, on Greenwell Road opposite Tesco, is the latest phase in Freshwater’s plans to regenerate Aycliffe shopping centre.

It had been heavily delayed due to long-running disputes between utility companies over the ownership of underground pipes – pegging it back by at least six months.

The development will incorporate additional parking for 74 cars and will open up a new entrance route to the town centre, which is hoped will eventually attract other high street retailers to the town.

A computer-generated image of the new shop is pictured below.

Really pleased to see development taking place. Crossing the road at junction of Dalton Way/ Greenwell Road is taking your life in your hands though because you can’t see if cars are coming round the bend becaause of the fencing round the site. I do feel for people on mobility scooters because they can only cross where the dropped kerbs are. Just wondering if meshed fencing could be installed on the bend, so at least we could see if cars are coming…probably not because of security issues. However, hooray , Welcome to our town Aldi .
