Police say they believe the man who was killed on the A1 near Newton Aycliffe on Sunday was a soldier based at Catterick Garrison.

Durham Constabulary are appealing for witnesses after the man, thought to be in his early 20s, died after being hit by a lorry on the A1(M) in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The incident happened at approximately 3.20am on the south bound carriageway, three-quarters of a mile north of junction 58 near Aycliffe.

The lorry involved, a Volvo FH13 3×3 articulated vehicle, is owned by a local transport company from Darlington.

The vehicle was in lane one of the A1M when the vehicle collided with the pedestrian who was walking south on the carriageway.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene – an investigation is currently ongoing. He has not yet been formally identified but is thought to be in his early 20s and a serving soldier based at Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire.

The road was closed for over five hours while officers conducted enquiries at the scene.

Any witnesses to the accident are requested to contact Durham Constabulary’s Accident unit on 0191 375 2159.
